Mission & Overview
Earth Day Coalition (EDC) is a nonprofit environmental education and advocacy organization serving Northeast Ohio and the nation. EDC was established in 1990 to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of Earth Day in Ohio. The Mission of Earth Day Coalition is to provide education, inspire leadership and encourage action for a healthy environment.
EDC has four core programs:
Clean Transportation: The Clean Transportation Program educates consumers and fleets about clean fuels, practices, and technologies that help our region to reduce dependency on foreign oil, while concurrently building a strong local economy and improving our quality of life through a reduction in airborne emissions. Since receiving the 1999 U.S. Department of Energy’s “Clean Cities” designation for Northeast Ohio the Clean Transportation Program has educated thousands of fleet managers and members of the general public through intimate round table events and large day long seminars. In addition, the Clean Transportation Program coordinates the Clean Vehicle Exhibit , featuring everything from human power to plug-in hybrid electric power at the annual EarthFest event at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds.
Earth Day: EDC organizes EarthFest every April to celebrate Earth Day in Ohio. Over 200 affiliate organizations and 500+ active volunteers participate in making EarthFest one of the longest standing and most successful Earth Day celebrations in the country. With as many as 50,000 people attending this one-day event, EarthFest has earned distinction as Ohio’s largest environmental education event. Annual exhibit areas include:
- Clean Fuels
- Green Home Improvement
- Local and Organic Foods
- Environmental Science
- Children's Area and more.
Student Leadership: The Student Environmental Congress is the only comprehensive environmental education program serving northeast Ohio high schools. This dynamic student leadership and service-learning program enhances regional high school student's research skills, problem solving, and verbal and written communication skills while uniting Cleveland Public Schools with schools in surrounding suburban districts in hands-on projects for a cleaner and healthier future.
Neighborhood Action: The Sustainable Cleveland Partnership (SCP) is a regional initiative for community-based environmental protection for low income and minority communities. In the framework of environmental justice, sustainable development and pollution prevention, SCP training workshops have included trainings such as right-to know laws, environmental risk regulation and reduction, environmental audits of specific neighborhoods and the Title V air permit program. We focus on clean air, clean water and work with our community to build local assets such as the Dike 14 Nature Preserve.
Earth Day Coalition publishes a member and affiliate newsletter, maintains a comprehensive website at www.earthdaycoalition.org where an extensive environmental resources guide is available, and provides numerous fact sheets and other resources.
EDC has received awards for Excellence in Education from the Cleveland Better Business Bureau, the Scene Magazine Readers’ Poll for the Best Effort to Control Pollution, Cuyahoga County’s Golden Spruce Award, and Certificates of Environmental Achievement from Renew America's Environmental Success Index. Executive Directors were presented with the Outstanding Conservationist Award from Cleveland Metroparks Board of Commissioners. Director, Chris Trepal, received the Cleveland YWCA Greater Cleveland Woman of Achievement Award for environmental work including empowerment of women and elimination of racism.
