Cleveland, OH- Join Earth Day Coalition for EarthFest 2014 at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds, this Sunday, April 13th from 10am-5pm. In partnership with Mayor Frank Jackson’s Sustainable Cleveland 2019 initiative, the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District, Cuyahoga Arts & Culture, Cuyahoga County Solid Waste District and ZeroWasteNEO, this year’s EarthFest will celebrate the “Year of Zero Waste.”  EarthFest will feature 270 exhibits in 9 sustainability exhibit areas including: Zero Waste, Advanced & Renewable Energy, Environmental Science, Local & Sustainable Food, Clean Transportation (with Ride & Drive), Health & Fitness, Community Works, Family Fun and Green Home & Garden.  Families will enjoy all day entertainment with eco-activities, biodiesel powered amusement park rides, music on 4 stages, urban farm animals, healthy food from local food trucks, the NASA “Village,” Lake Erie Nature & Science Center’s mobile planetarium and wildlife rehab exhibits, Valley Exotics Zoo, Jungle Bob with his animal friends, pony rides and much more… “We are very excited to be presenting our largest ever community collaboration of exhibits, seminars and family entertainment at our 25th Anniversary EarthFest.  With the warm weather predicted for Sunday we are anticipating large turnout,” says Scott Sanders, Earth Day Coalition Executive Director.

Presented and organized by Earth Day Coalition since 1990, EarthFest is Ohio’s largest environmental education event and the longest running Earth Day celebration in the nation.

2:00 & 4:00   Vehicle Efficiency and the EcoCAR2, Sarah Jadwin (OSU Center for Automotive Research)

• EarthFest 2014 will be a Zero waste event with a goal of diverting 90% of waste through reduction, recycling and composting.  Earth Day Coalition has partnered with Kimble Recycling and Disposal to manage the recyclables and Future Organics to haul all compost to Barnes Nursery.  Ohio City Bicycle Co-Op will run “Zero Emissions for Zero Waste” rickshaws to unload recycling and composting stations throughout the day.  ZeroWaste NEO volunteers will be stationed at each composting/recycling area to provide educational instruction on proper composting and recycling practices.  All exhibitors and event attendees are encouraged to bring their own beverage mugs to assist with waste reduction.

• Flushing unused or expired medication down the toilet because you don't know what else to do?  The Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District, in partnership with the Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Office, will host a pharmaceutical collection from 10am to 2pm outside of Gate 5 (Bagley Road entrance).  Any unused and expired medications will be collected by law enforcement officers who will then dispose of the medication safely.  The goal is to protect local waterways as wastewater treatment plants are not designed to remove pharmaceuticals and help decrease prescription drug abuse.  The drop-off is completely confidential; no personal information will be collected.   All personal information, like name and insurance information, should be removed from the bottle or blacked out with a marker.

• Visit the “Ton of Trash” display near (inside Gate 5 entrance) to see how much garbage the average household generates in a year and what percentage of that can be recycled or composted.  Make your personal pledge on the Go Zero! pledge wall.

• Visit the Berea “Repurpose” Flea Market at the Fairgrounds adjacent to EarthFest on Sunday from 7am-2pm (separate admission)

• Meet Dick Goddard and adopt an animal in need.  Cleveland’s well-known meteorologist and animals rights supporter will be at EarthFest from 1pm-4pm signing “6 Inches of Partly Cloudy” and “Wise on Weather.”  Families will also have an opportunity to get up close with animal rescues, urban farm animals and petting zoos.  Lake Erie Nature and Science Center will provide an educational experience with their wildlife rehabilitation services; Valley Exotics Zoo will be on site with a large petting zoo; and Jungle Bob will have regular shows with his animal friends.  Adoptable animal rescues include Greyhound Adoption of Ohio and Berea Animal Rescue Friends.
