Art, Poetry and Essay Contest

The Art, Poetry and Essay Contest is an annual contest open to all students, grades K-12, in Cuyahoga, Ashtabula, Lake, Geauga, Lorain, Medina, Summit, and Portage counties.  Students were asked to share their thoughts and feelings on "Local and Sustainable Food" through drawings, paintings, photography, essays, or poetry.  Topics were created in three grade-specific categories to guide students with the content of their entries.  Entries were judged on understanding of the environmental topic, creativity, and originality. 

Winning entries were displayed at Earth Day Coalition's EarthFest 2012 at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo for thousands of visitors to see.  Each winner was invited to participate in the Welcoming Ceremonies, and received the acclaimed Hope and Stanley Adelstein Award for Excellence.  The winning entries will be on display in a traveling exhibit throughout the year.

NRDC’s "Toxic Power" uses publicly-available data to rank states and power plants based on 2010 air pollution levels showing that Ohio (#2) only follows Kentucky (#1) among the top 20 toxic U.S. states where residents are at a higher risk of numerous health problems just by breathing.

The U.S. EPA has released the 17th annual U.S. greenhouse gas inventory showing that overall emissions have grown by over 10% from 1990 to 2010.
