DPFs improve Cleveland's air quality
WKYC Channel 3 aired a story about the effect the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority's (RTA) retroffited busses have had on air pollution levels in Cleveland. As many readers are well aware, Greater Cleveland is in non-attainment with the Federal EPA for fine particle pollution (FPP).
Busses using a combination of Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) fuel and diesel particulate filters (DPFs) drastically reduce fine particle pollution. FPP is linked to numerous detrimental health effects. Since 2003, RTA has been utilizing ULSD in its entire bus fleet and has employed DPFs in all the busses marked 'clean air bus'.
In continuing down the road to cleaner air for our region, perhaps RTA will consider fueling their busses with a biodiesel blend? Biodiesel Magazine reports that a B20 blend reduces fine particle pollution even further while simultaneously improving the functionality of the DPF.
