North East Ohio Clean Transportation Program
Municipal Idle Reduction
The City of Cleveland and a broad based coalition of organizations, including the Earth Day Coalition, are working to create an Idle Reduction Ordinance for our five county region. The City of Cleveland enacted an internal Idle Reduction Policy for city vehicles in April of 2006. Since that time, several other cities in the region have enacted similar policies.
However, the goal of this project is to create a model ordinance (law) that will be adopted by all 162 municipalites in our five county region.
The purpose for creating this ordinance is to protect public health and the environment by reducing emissions while conserving fuel, maintaining adequate rest and safety for all drivers, and removing barriers to economic development imposed by the region's air quality status under the Federal Clean Air Act.
