EarthFest 2010 Celebrates World's 40th Anniversary of Earth Day
On April 22, 1970, the first Earth Day took place as a nation-wide mass-demonstration, and is recognized as the beginning of the modern environmental movement. Approximately 20 million Americans participated, with a goal of a healthy, sustainable environment. 20 years later, in 1990, 200 million people in 41 countries took part in the global, grassroots demonstration.
It was in 1990 that Earth Day Coalition was first conceived as a year-round non-profit education organization following on the 35,000 plus attendees to the group's first EarthFest celebration at the zoo.
Today, EarthFest and the Earth Day Coalitoin continue to coordinate the one-day education and festival event. This year's EarthFest is our 21st celebration, making Cleveland the proud home of the longest consecutively running Earth Day festival in the country (and probably the world!). This year's event takes place on Sunday, April 18 at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.
And kick off the morning by joining the annual Walk or Bike for the Earth, raise pledges, support environmental education, and get into EarthFest free!
