18th Annual Instrumental Evening for the Earth
Earth Day Coalition celebrated their annual Instrumental Evening for the Earth last week at the smARTspace at 78th Street Studios in the Gordon Square Arts District, which featured a performance by members of the world-famous Cleveland Orchestra, a delicious food reception, eco-raffle, and live auction. The gourmet food reception featured dishes from 17 area restaurants, including: Luxe Kitchen and Lounge, Jam GlutenFree Bakery, Rising Star Coffee Roasters, The Grocery OHC, Earth Bistro, Tartine Bistro, Local West, Cha Pizza and Spirits, Banana Blossom Thai Cuisine, The Harp, AMP 150, Indian Delight, Phuel Café, Red Lotus Foods, Barefoot Wine, Cleveland Whiskey, and Great Lakes Brewing Co.
Community Works Program Awards representing each of Earth Day Coalition’s four program areas were presented at the event to local individuals, organizations, and collaborative partners who are a tribute to the ways creative environmental education and leadership can open new doors to environmental sustainability. This year’s award winners include Fairview Park high school’s “Stream Team” for their exemplary commitment to the Coe Creek Streambank Restoration Project; major collaborators and several champions of the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus Demonstration Project including the Greater Cleveland RTA, NASA Glenn Research Center, and The Cleveland Foundation; The Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District for their exemplary outreach and commitment to educating the public about Clean Water issues at this year’s EarthFest; and the Cleveland Metroparks for connecting Greater Clevelanders to our lakefront through the acquisition and stewardship of lake front green space.
The evening, which was hosted by 90.3 WCPN’s Jim Mehrling, and chaired by Joe Calabrese of the Greater Cleveland RTA, Julius Ciaccia of the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District, and Cleveland City Councilman Matt Zone (Ward 15), welcomed around 400 guests for an evening full of food, art, raffles, and musical performances from NEO Trio Acoustic Jazz, folk-duo Shawn and Shelby, and a one of a kind performance by Daniel McKelway, Lembi Veskimets, and friends from the world-famous Cleveland Orchestra. The event also kicked off our 2016 theme, in collaboration with Mayor Frank Jackson’s Sustainable Cleveland 2019 initiative, the “Year of Clean Transportation”. EarthFest 2016: Celebrating the Year of Clean Transportation will be held at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds on Sunday, April 17th. Special thanks to all our volunteers, our host, our honorary chairs, and our musicians! Thanks for helping Earth Day Coalition further it’s mission to provide education, inspire leadership, and encourage action for a healthy environment.
